Wellness Policy

The Baugo Community Schools Board of Trustees established the following wellness policy as required by the USDA for those schools districts participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

The district will provide students access to healthy foods and beverages; provide opportunities for developmentally appropriate physical activity; that all meals served by the school corporation meet or exceeds the federal nutritional guidelines issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A Coordinated School Health Advisory Council will oversee these activities.

Baugo will engage students, parents/guardians, teachers, food service professionals, health professionals and other interested parties in developing, implementing, monitoring, reviewing, corporation-wide nutrition and physical activity policies. A CSHAC will be formed and maintained at the corporation level to oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of the policy.

In accordance with Indiana Code 20-26-9-18, and the Healthy, Hunger Free Kid Act of 2010, the district's council will include at least the following:

  1. Parents/Guardians
  2. Food Service Director and staff
  3. School Health Professionals/Registered Dietitian
  4. Physical Education Teachers
  5. School Board Member
  6. School Administrators
  7. Interested members and representative of the community and its organizations

The council will meet to review nutrition and physical activity polices and to develop an action plan for the upcoming school year. The council will report annually to the Superintendent and the School Board on the implementation of the policy including any recommendations for revision.

The Wellness Policy will be made available to students and families through varies avenues.

Baugo Community Schools will provide and promote the National School Lunch Program and Breakfast Programs to ensure that all students have access to healthy foods to support healthier choices and promote optimal learning.

  1. Nutrition education shall be included in the health curriculum so that the instruction is sequential and standards-based and provides students with the knowledge, attitude, and skills necessary to lead healthy lives.
  2. The school's food service staff will be involved in nutrition education.
  3. Nutrition education shall be incorporated into the physical education classes at the elementary level.
  4. Nutrition information will be offered in lunchrooms.
  5. Nutrition education will extend beyond the school day by making a link available on the district's website that will provide information on nutrition to students, parents, and community members.
  6. Schools will be encouraged to partner with outside agencies to enhance its nutrition education opportunities.


  1. Students in grades K through 9 will participate in a sequential, comprehensive physical education program that meets or exceeds the standards established by the state.
  2. The physical education classes shall provide students with opportunities to learn, practice, and be assessed on developmentally appropriate information, attitudes, and skills necessary to engage in lifelong health-enhancing physical activity.
  3. Planned instruction in physical education shall require all students to be engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least fifty percent of the scheduled class.
  4. Physical education will extend beyond the school day by making a link available on the district's website that will provide information on physical activity to students, parents, and community members.


  1. Physical activity and movement will be integrated, whenever possible, across the curricula and throughout the school day.
  2. All students in grades K through 6 will be provided with a daily recess period. Recess shall not be used as a punishment.
  3. Students will be given opportunities for physical activity through after-school programs.
  4. The district will encourage all stakeholders to participate in physical activity and develop healthy lifelong habits.


  1. All food available to students including vending machines, a al carte, classroom parties, school celebrations, classroom snacks, and fundraisers shall offer food choices that provide the chance for students to select items that are healthy and nutritious.
  2. A letter will be sent to each parent of a K-6 student, explaining the district nutrition policy regarding holiday parties and birthday celebrations. This letter will include a list of healthy snack items.
  3. All food available to students during the school day must comply with state and federal child nutrition program regulations.
  4. While the district encourages parents to come to school for lunch with their student, parents are requested to refrain from bringing fast foods to school.


  1. Adequate time will be provided for eating lunch.
  2. The district will provide a clean, safe, and enjoyable meal environment.
  3. Portable water will be available during mealtime.
  4. The district will protect the identity of students who are eligible for free and reduced priced meal.
  5. Students will be discouraged from sharing their food or beverages with others during meal time, given concerns about allergies and other restrictions on some student's diets.
  6. Portable water will be available during mealtime.

Baugo Schools supports the health and well-being of its staff by creating and promoting policy and environmental supports to provide physical activity and healthy eating opportunities.

  1. Staff members will be allowed to use facilities outside of the school hours for fitness.
  2. Healthy choices will be available in vending machines.
  3. Healthy food options will be available at staff meetings and gatherings.

The District is committed to enforcing the policies and guidelines included in this document. Through the implementation of the School Wellness Policy, the corporation will create an environment that supports opportunities for physical activities and healthy eating behaviors. To ensuring continuing progress, the corporation will evaluate implementation efforts and their impact on students and staff.

  1. The building nurse will ensure that their buildings are in compliance with the corporation's wellness policy each semester by assessing implementation strategies using the Baugo Wellness Assessment Tool. The principal shall then report findings to the superintendent.
  2. At least once every three years, the policy will be reviewed using a more comprehensive assessment.
  3. The evaluation of the wellness policy and implementation will be directed by the CSHAC.
  4. Policy language will be assessed each year and revised as needed.
